Detailed plot

Reveal episode spoilers

Hassan remains a prisoner of the Sons of Albion, whose threat to kill him hangs over the episode. The captors carry on talking and arguing while a young man waits downstairs for the death they have promised to broadcast. Their domestic surroundings make the situation more disturbing, rather than less serious: this is not a remote battlefield, but a London house containing men who have decided that their victim does not deserve the protection they expect for themselves.

At Regent’s Park, Taverner oversees the response to the kidnapping. The background of the hostage video offers investigators a clue: the brickwork points towards London. Finding an approximate area is still a long way from finding Hassan. Television coverage brings the threat into Slough House as well, leaving the discarded officers watching an urgent operation from which they have been excluded. River has already refused to accept that exclusion, and continues looking for a connection with Hobden.

His questions do not produce the breakthrough he wants. Instead, he returns to the journalist himself, following him through London and treating the surveillance assignment as a possible lead in the abduction. Hobden’s political associations make him worth watching, but River’s determination also has a personal charge. He believes that useful information might justify the risks he has taken and demonstrate that his demotion was a mistake. Sid’s greater patience sits uneasily beside that need to act.

Catherine’s memories interrupt the present with glimpses of Charles Partner and Lamb. The sequence connects the office’s abrasive daily routine to a shared history that Catherine has not left behind. Lamb’s treatment of her is therefore more complicated than the behaviour of a difficult boss towards an assistant. The episode reveals enough to make their relationship matter, while keeping the circumstances around Charles’s death unresolved.

River and Sid end up watching Hobden’s home together from a car. Their conversation changes River’s understanding of his colleague: Sid says that she has been assigned to keep an eye on him. The officer he has been treating as a fellow exile is also observing him for somebody else. That revelation lands just before a masked intruder enters Hobden’s house. Surveillance gives way to a violent emergency, and the two officers intervene.

During the struggle, a gun goes off and Sid is hit in the head. River calls for medical help as Hobden’s home burns. His investigation has brought him close to the danger he wanted to uncover, but the immediate result is a seriously injured colleague. The episode ends with Sid’s condition unresolved and River facing a problem that professional pride cannot solve. Hassan is still in captivity, and the operation now has a second life in immediate danger.

Turning points

Reveal turning points

Sid’s admission changes the meaning of their partnership without erasing the partnership itself. Watching River and helping him can be simultaneous tasks. The scene makes the familiar spy-thriller question of who is watching whom intensely personal: he discovers that an ordinary workplace relationship also belongs to a chain of command he cannot see.

The shooting then strips away the relative comfort of that conversation. River has been arguing over responsibility and competence; now he has to respond to someone bleeding in front of him. The difference between surveillance and intervention matters here. An officer can believe that stepping in is necessary and still be unable to control what follows. Sid’s injury gives that limitation a human cost.

The hostage scenes supply a quieter warning. Familiar routines do not make the captors safe, and their ability to chat does not soften the threat to Hassan. Their everyday behaviour forces the viewer to sit with the fact that violence can be planned by people who otherwise look entirely ordinary.

Book vs show

Reveal book and television spoilers

1. The extremist group

Herron calls the kidnappers’ organisation the Voice of Albion. Television uses the Sons of Albion, changing the name encountered by the officers and the audience as the hostage story develops.

2. The deadline

The novel’s first announcement gives a 48-hour limit. The television threat promises an execution at sunrise, tying the crisis to a more immediate overnight countdown.

3. The captors

Hassan gives three men the names Moe, Larry and Curly in the book. The screen group has a fourth member, Zeppo, extending the number of relationships inside the house.

4. The office ensemble

Kay White is one of the disgraced officers introduced in Herron’s novel. She does not appear in the television department, so the office watching the hostage coverage has a smaller membership on screen.

Mick Herron, Slow Horses (2010).

Characters and actors

River’s urgency and Sid’s restraint drive the central investigation. Lamb remains the authority they must work around, while Catherine’s memories open another part of his history. Hobden, played by Paul Hilton, is the surveillance target; Antonio Aakeel’s Hassan gives the hostage scenes their emotional centre. The captors include Brian Vernel as Curly, David Walmsley as Larry, Stephen Walters as Zeppo and Sam Hazeldine as Moe.

Linked locations

Slough House provides the workplace base while the action moves to Hobden’s home and the house holding Hassan. The hostage video makes its London setting a clue within the investigation. These domestic spaces also create the episode’s strongest contrast: apparently familiar rooms become places of surveillance, secrecy and violence.

Trivia

Apple released Work Drinks alongside the opening episode on 1 April 2022. The pairing moves from River’s failed exercise and enforced office routine to the consequences of an unauthorised investigation, giving the premiere two very different kinds of jeopardy.

Questions and answers

Why is Sid watching River?

She tells him that monitoring him is her assignment. The revelation explains why a competent officer’s presence at Slough House cannot be understood simply as another career failure.

Does this episode confirm Sid’s death?

No. It ends after she is shot and River calls for medical assistance. Her immediate condition remains unresolved at the end of Work Drinks.

Has Hassan been rescued by the end?

He remains captive. River and Sid’s investigation into Hobden has produced another emergency, rather than resolving the threatened execution.
