There are two useful answers to the question of Mick Herron’s books in order. A publication list shows how the bibliography developed; a reading plan keeps a continuing story together. The list below covers every book in this archive, including the collections. The recommendations then separate the Slough House novels, their shorter companions and the Oxford sequence, so your next choice can follow the strand you are enjoying.
For a first visit to Jackson Lamb’s office, start with Slow Horses and follow the numbered novels. New operations provide each book with its own immediate story, but the people and their relationships change. A later title can therefore tell you things about an earlier book before you have read it. The shorter works can be interleaved by publication order, with the standalone connections offered as optional additions rather than compulsory homework.

Recommended Slough House reading order
The sequence below follows the nine numbered novels and inserts the individually published shorter Slough House works at their publication-order positions. The List fits after Dead Lions and before Real Tigers. The Drop sits between London Rules and Joe Country, and The Catch between Joe Country and Slough House. Standing by the Wall follows Bad Actors. These placements organise your reading; they do not assign precise dates to every fictional event.
Nobody Walks is an optional companion introducing JK Coe within the Slough House world. Read it before Spook Street if you want that background before continuing with the ensemble. The Secret Hours offers another independent intelligence story, with connections best discovered during reading. For an established series reader, placing it after Bad Actors and before Clown Town follows its publication position without revealing those connections.

Zoë Boehm and the Oxford novels
Read Down Cemetery Road, The Last Voice You Hear, Why We Die and Smoke and Whispers in that order. This is a separate continuing sequence, so you do not need to work through the Slough House novels first. If the Apple series brought you to Herron, beginning with Down Cemetery Road lets you encounter Sarah Tucker and Zoë before their later investigations. The television version calls Sarah Trafford.
Standalones and collections
Reconstruction and This Is What Happened offer further complete stories outside the numbered sequences. Choose one when you want a different setting and central predicament, rather than assuming that all Herron thrillers require knowledge of Lamb’s department. The standalone guides explain the starting situation without giving away an ending.
Collections are best selected by contents. Dolphin Junction gathers eleven stories; All the Livelong Day and Other Stories contains five that also appear in the larger volume. Standing by the Wall: The Collected Slough House Novellas brings five shorter intelligence works together, including The Last Dead Letter. Watch the Quiet Snow gathers those shorter Slough House titles in a forthcoming UK volume. Buying or borrowing a collection can replace several separate editions in your reading plan, rather than adding another stage to the numbered story.
TV & film adaptations
Slow Horses began on Apple TV in 2022. Its first five series each adapt one numbered novel. Series 6 brings together Joe Country and Slough House, so television and book numbers diverge at that point. Series 7 is commissioned from Bad Actors; the announcement identifies the source, but does not supply a premiere date. The linked hubs distinguish released episodes from officially announced plans.
Down Cemetery Road premiered on Apple TV on 29 October 2025, with Emma Thompson as Zoë Boehm and Ruth Wilson as Sarah Trafford. Its starting point is the first Oxford novel. The book page discusses the adaptation and the difference between the two Sarah names, while keeping the central plot discussion behind a spoiler control.
Apple additionally confirmed on 15 September 2026 that the commissioned eighth Slow Horses series will adapt Clown Town. That is an announcement about a future adaptation, rather than a release date. The Clown Town guide links the official confirmation.
