Spoiler-free synopsis

Christmas has reached Slough House, where seasonal goodwill is an unreliable prospect. Jackson Lamb has a photograph he wants altered, and asks Roddy Ho to do the work. Ho sees himself as the indispensable technical genius of the office, so the task fits his account of his own importance. What the photograph means to Lamb is another matter. The short story brings the institution’s difficult present into contact with memory, without promising a comforting festive transformation.

The attraction is the pairing. Ho’s confidence and Lamb’s guardedness make a simple technical request worth watching closely. One man thinks in terms of being needed; the other has given him a job involving the past. Readers looking for another enormous conspiracy should adjust their expectations to the scale of a Christmas interlude. It is a chance to spend time with familiar personalities through a smaller situation, where the choice of what to change in a picture carries the intrigue.

Reading order and crossover characters

Standing by the Wall appeared in 2022, after Bad Actors in publication order. That is the recommended place to read it alongside the numbered novels: a seasonal pause after the eighth book. Continue the main sequence with Clown Town. The story’s late publication point is a useful reason to keep it for later in your reading, even though its length makes it tempting to pick up immediately.

Jackson Lamb and Roddy Ho are the central crossover figures confirmed in the publisher’s synopsis. Their presence gives the story a more direct connection to the Slough House office than Bachelor’s handler adventures. If Ho’s view of himself interests you, read with an eye on how much the request really supports it. A colleague being useful and a colleague being important are not necessarily identical things.

The photograph

Reveal the memory question behind the task

Lamb asks for the image to be doctored, making the past something that can apparently be edited. Ho possesses the technical ability to perform the alteration, but technical control is different from understanding why it is wanted. That distinction is the opening’s most useful point of attention. The photograph puts memory into physical form; the instruction to change it invites the reader to ask what Lamb wishes to preserve, conceal or remove.

Christmas at Slough House

Read the seasonal setting as an opportunity to consider ordinary expectations against this particular workplace. Christmas usually offers a language of fellowship, gratitude and looking back. Put those expectations beside Lamb’s request and Ho’s self-regard, and the scene already has friction without a larger mission. A good discussion question is whether the time of year changes what you expect from their interaction. The answer can reveal as much about the reader’s hopes for these characters as about the task itself.

Television and the book sequence

For the numbered novel associated with Series 7, use the Bad Actors guide. Standing by the Wall is a separate shorter work, best kept under its own title in a reading plan. Television viewers who want more of Lamb and Ho can make it part of their later book reading. Its office setting is familiar, but familiarity does not require fitting the story into a particular television episode.

Standalone story, collection and audio

The same words also form the title of the US collection Standing by the Wall: The Collected Slough House Novellas. Check the full title when identifying an edition: this page concerns the individual Christmas story, while the collection contains five works. The UK publisher lists Sean Barrett as narrator of the downloadable audiobook released on 3 November 2022. Readers choosing between individual and collected formats should compare contents, particularly if they already own some of the novellas.
