The Slough House Files spy duckTHE SLOUGH HOUSE FILES

Slow Horses · Series 1 · Episode 1

Failure’s Contagious

Slow Horses opens with the sort of urgent pursuit that promises a conventional spy thriller, then drops its would-be hero into an office where searching rubbish counts as a day's work. River Cartwright wants to recover his career; Jackson Lamb appears determined to make that ambition unbearable. Between them sits an assignment involving a discredited journalist, a copied memory stick and information that may be much less valuable than it looks.

Detailed plot

Reveal episode spoilers

At Stansted Airport, River follows a suspect while MI5's command room directs the operation. James Webb supplies the man's clothing description, and River moves in. The arrest produces no explosive device. A dispute over the description follows: River insists Webb gave him the wrong colours, while Webb denies it. River then pursues the second man despite orders to stop. He reaches the railway platform, but not soon enough to prevent the suspect activating his device. The apparent catastrophe becomes the training failure hanging over River's career.

His punishment is Slough House, where Jackson Lamb supervises officers who have fallen out of favour. River is handed Robert Hobden's rubbish to search while colleagues trawl unpromising records. The work offers little dignity and no obvious route back to operational duty. Sid Baker, meanwhile, watches Hobden in a café. A spilled drink creates the distraction she needs to copy his USB stick, turning an ordinary encounter into a small surveillance success.

Lamb sends River to deliver the resulting material to Regent's Park. The laptop travels inside a protected flashbox, but River cannot resist finding out what it contains. Opening the box burns his hand; he nevertheless makes his own copy before handing it over. Webb uses their encounter to revive River's humiliation, including the suggestion that his grandfather's influence saved him from dismissal. For River, even an errand becomes another opportunity to prove that he was wronged.

Back at the office, the rubbish points him towards far-right political material. Sid warns him against becoming consumed by the assignment, and Lamb orders them away from unauthorised investigations. Hobden is also alert to the possibility that somebody has been interfering with him. River visits David Cartwright, who explains Hobden's political connections and warns his grandson about the uses to which MI5 can put its discarded staff. River hears a reason to be suspicious, rather than a reason to stop.

The episode also follows lives outside the office. Catherine Standish attends an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, where thoughts of Charles intrude on the present. Hassan Ahmed leaves a comedy evening with a friend; after they part, he is abducted. That violence changes the scale of the story. Until now, River's frustration has dominated his sense of urgency. Hassan's situation creates a danger that has nothing to do with an officer's wounded professional pride.

The following morning, Roddy Ho establishes that the supposedly valuable copied data is pi. Sid recognises Hobden's decoy, puncturing River's hopes of a discovery. Then footage of Hassan's captivity reaches the team. The captors identify themselves as the Sons of Albion and threaten to kill him at sunrise. River suspects Hobden may connect their dull surveillance job to the kidnapping. Lamb wants the department to stay out of it, but River leaves rather than accept another instruction to do nothing.

Turning points

Reveal turning points

The first arrest establishes the problem before River understands it: confidence cannot compensate for unreliable information. His refusal to stand down is both understandable and dangerous. He is trying to correct a mistake while also demonstrating that he deserves responsibility, and those two aims are not always compatible.

The pi discovery performs a smaller version of the same reversal. River has taken a physical risk for information that cannot justify it. Hassan's kidnapping then gives his determination a possible public purpose, but the episode leaves open whether he can distinguish helping somebody from rehabilitating himself.

Book vs show

Reveal book and television spoilers

The opening assessment makes four concrete changes to the pursuit in the publisher’s first-chapter excerpt.

1. The transport hub

Herron's novel begins at King's Cross railway station. Television moves the exercise to Stansted Airport, using a terminal pursuit before reaching the train platform.

2. The first arrest

On the page, the wrong suspect is intercepted on mainline Platform 10, with armed officers dropping from a train roof. On screen, the initial arrest takes place airside near a boarding area.

3. Finding the second suspect

The novel has River demand transport-police CCTV access and realise that trains still pass through the closed Underground station. The television operation follows the suspect through airport cameras from MI5's command room.

4. The final chase

The book sends River racing a moving northbound Victoria line train along the platform as the suspect reveals his belt. Episode 1 ends its opening pursuit on the Stansted Express platform. Both versions make being almost fast enough a career-defining failure.

Characters and actors

River and Lamb establish the central clash, while Sid's café operation shows a quieter kind of competence. Catherine, Roddy, Louisa and Min belong to the office ensemble; Taverner and Duffy represent operational authority. David provides River with a very different account of how the Service works. Other identifiable participants include James Webb (Freddie Fox), Robert Hobden (Paul Hilton) and Hassan Ahmed (Antonio Aakeel).

Linked locations

The opening pursuit takes place at London Stansted Airport. Slough House’s Aldersgate Street frontage introduces River’s new workplace; the office interiors are studio sets. Regent’s Park supplies the story’s name for MI5 headquarters, giving River’s humiliating errand a pointed contrast with Lamb’s department.

Trivia

Apple launched the first two episodes together on 1 April 2022. The paired release places River’s demotion beside the developing hostage crisis, allowing the office comedy and the thriller to establish their competing rhythms from the outset.

Questions and answers

Is the airport attack a real terrorist incident in the story?

No. It is River's failed assessment exercise, shown with the urgency of a live operation before the episode establishes its consequences for him.

Does the USB stick contain useful intelligence?

Roddy identifies the copied data as pi. That discovery exposes Hobden's decoy and undermines River's belief that he has acquired something important.

Which novel does the first series adapt?

The first six episodes adapt Mick Herron’s Slow Horses, published in 2010. River’s disastrous assessment and the kidnapping of Hassan establish the opening novel’s central conflict.
