Chris Reilly in Slow Horses

Chris Reilly plays Nick Duffy, the security chief whose officers make the Park’s displeasure painfully tangible. He appears in Series 1, 2 and 3. Duffy’s uniform is a business suit rather than a field agent’s disguise: he arrives backed by an institution, expecting other people to comply. Reilly uses that entitlement to give apparently routine conversations a threatening edge.

The performance belongs to the show’s account of how power travels downwards. Duffy can be abrasive without the wit that makes Lamb’s insults entertaining. His certainty is the point. The actor keeps the character’s attention on the immediate exercise of authority, making him a useful contrast with the calculations taking place in the offices above him.

Series 1–3 standout scenes: spoilers

River’s treatment in Series 1, episode 5 displays Duffy’s readiness to turn institutional suspicion into physical punishment. The archive operation in Series 3, episode 5 gives that behaviour a larger, more dangerous setting. In the Series 3 finale, his fight with Marcus finally brings the apparently superior security officer down to the level of an individual opponent. Reilly’s aggressive confidence makes the change in the balance of power especially satisfying to watch.

Interviews and approach

In TheWrap’s Series 3 interview, writer Will Smith discussed Duffy’s low opinion of the Slough House officers. That is the creator’s explanation, rather than a quotation from Reilly. It helps identify what the performance must accomplish: the audience needs to see both the contempt and the limits of the man expressing it.

Reilly spoke to Big Issue North in 2021 about arriving at acting through amateur drama and studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He described experience of other people’s difficult circumstances as informing the authenticity he brought to acting. That discussion concerns his wider approach to the profession, not a claim that he based Duffy on a particular real security officer.

Career highlights

Reilly played Sergeant Alex Baxter in the BBC’s The Last Post, broadcast in 2017. The military drama offered a different kind of authority figure from Duffy, within an ensemble whose professional duties and private strains repeatedly collide. BAFTA’s own record confirms that Reilly won the Actor Television prize at the British Academy Scotland Awards in 2018 for that performance.

He played Gil Tomine in The Feed (2019), a science-fiction drama concerned with technology that connects human minds. He also appeared in Guy Ritchie’s Wrath of Man (2021), a heist thriller led by Jason Statham. Together those credits move from period television to speculative drama and contemporary action, rather than presenting his career as a succession of identical security men.

Where to watch next

The Last Post (2017) is the clearest next choice for a substantial television performance and the work recognised by BAFTA Scotland. The Feed (2019) places him in a larger technological conspiracy, with a different relationship between individuals and an organisation’s power. Wrath of Man (2021) offers a feature-film alternative, exchanging the Park’s office politics for an armed robbery thriller. These are career recommendations; availability depends on your country and service.
