Detailed plot

Reveal episode spoilers

The escaped members of Slough House come together to decide what they can do next. Struan remains compromised and Sid is in hospital. Lamb explains the danger of Taverner’s operation and the way his own department is being positioned to take responsibility for its failure. River arrives with something more useful than enthusiasm: he remembers where he has seen Alan Black before, and knows that there is a photograph connecting Black to Taverner.

The picture comes from River’s surveillance of Taverner during his training. It would undermine her claim that the kidnapping can be laid at Lamb’s door. The obstacle is its location: a copy is held inside Regent’s Park, in Webb’s possession. Lamb and River set out to recover it. Catherine takes charge of the colleagues left behind, who continue working on the missing hostage and the van used by the kidnappers.

Lamb arrives at the Park in deliberately conspicuous fashion, playing the Proclaimers loudly in the car and drawing security attention towards himself. He allows the confrontation to move inside, where Taverner offers him a route out of prosecution in exchange for accepting her version of events and losing his career. Lamb stretches the encounter by announcing that the vehicle he brought back has a bomb in its boot, forcing the security response to look elsewhere.

River uses the diversion to get into the building through the parking area and reach Webb’s office. He finds the photograph in a folder labelled Fiasco and confronts the colleague whose actions contributed to his exile. The personal grievance and the immediate mission briefly coincide. River retrieves the evidence and brings it to Taverner, converting a memory of an old assessment into leverage against the present attempt to frame the team.

Outside London, the kidnappers continue arguing over Hassan. Zeppo has obtained a gun and uses it to challenge Curly’s insistence on an execution. The men talk about reaching a boat and getting away, with Hassan suggesting that his wealthy uncle could pay for his release. Their van needs fuel. Because the captors are covered in blood, Hassan is forced to go out and fill the tank himself, moving through a public space without being able to turn it into an escape.

After the stop, Hassan performs jokes for the men in the car. For a moment, laughter changes the atmosphere and distracts them from their disagreements. It also gives Curly an opening. He takes the gun and shoots Zeppo, destroying the brief challenge to his authority. At the Park, the photograph has forced Taverner to stop pursuing the Slough House frame-up and concentrate on Hassan. In the van, the hostage has just lost the captor who had begun resisting Curly’s plan.

Turning points

Reveal turning points

The photograph changes what River can bring to Lamb. A suspicion about the Park is difficult to use against the officers running it; a picture of Taverner with Black gives their argument something she has to answer. River’s old failure has not disappeared, but his training history now contains a resource that the department needs.

Lamb’s arrival works because he accepts looking ridiculous. He does not need to persuade the guards that he is a dignified intelligence officer; he needs their attention in a particular place at a particular moment. His provocation and River’s quieter search perform different parts of the same plan.

The laughter in the van is the episode’s cruelest reversal. Hassan’s ability to entertain his captors briefly produces a shared response, but it cannot dissolve the power they hold over him. Curly turns their distraction into another killing. A change in mood is shown to be much weaker than a change in who controls the weapon.

Book vs show

Reveal book and television spoilers

1. The rival leader

The novel has only Curly and Larry remaining after Black’s death. Television gives Zeppo a temporary armed challenge to Curly, adding a struggle for leadership that cannot happen in the three-captor book plot.

2. The public stop

The screen escape includes Hassan being made to refuel the van. The novel’s corresponding final journey concentrates on the satnav route and the captors’ arrival in Epping Forest.

3. Comedy and violence

Hassan’s screen performance briefly makes the captors laugh before Curly shoots Zeppo. In Herron’s forest sequence, Hassan mocks the men and Curly strikes him with the axe handle. The adaptation changes who is attacked and how comedy leads into the violence.

Mick Herron, Slow Horses (2010).

Characters and actors

Lamb and River work together at the Park, while Catherine leads the colleagues still searching from outside it. Freddie Fox’s Webb becomes the immediate obstacle between River and the photograph; Kristin Scott Thomas’s Taverner has to confront the evidence it contains. Hassan’s scenes depend on Antonio Aakeel negotiating small openings among Curly, Larry and Zeppo without ever having equal power.

Linked locations

The team regroups away from its office before Lamb and River enter the Park. Their separate tasks are set against the kidnappers’ journey out of London. A petrol station becomes the most exposed point of that journey, placing Hassan within sight of ordinary life while his captors still control whether he can reach it.

Trivia

Lamb uses the Proclaimers’ I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) during his conspicuous arrival at Regent’s Park. Contemporary recaps also identify the Fiasco folder as the hiding place of River’s photograph, connecting the title with an object he must physically recover.

River finds the photograph of Taverner meeting Alan Black. The evidence connects her directly to the undercover officer in the kidnapping operation.

Why does Hassan fill the van with petrol?

The kidnappers are bloodstained and need somebody to approach the pump without attracting immediate attention. They force their hostage to do it.

Who kills Zeppo?

Curly gets hold of the gun while the men are distracted and shoots him. Zeppo’s temporary attempt to control the escape ends with his death.
