Who is Sid Baker?

Sidonie “Sid” Baker is an MI5 operative assigned to Slough House, where she stands out for her competence and her refusal to take River Cartwright quite as seriously as he takes himself. She can keep pace with him in the field and puncture his self-importance in conversation. Their working partnership gives the opening series a different rhythm from the rest of the office: two younger agents sparring over a job neither wants to be doing.

Sid is an intriguing introduction to the distinction between professional ability and professional reputation. Slough House supposedly contains people who have failed. Watching her work raises a more interesting question about who decides what failure means. She does not need to announce herself as the cleverest person in the room. Her usefulness is apparent in the way she deals with a task, and her humour keeps River's wounded pride from becoming the only perspective available.

Olivia Cooke as Sid

Olivia Cooke gives Sid a brisk, teasing manner that makes her conversations with River feel like exchanges between colleagues rather than explanations for the audience. The enjoyment lies in the timing: a short response can undo the grander version of events he has been assembling. Cooke allows friendliness and resistance to coexist. Sid can like somebody without agreeing to flatter him, which makes her a particularly effective partner for an agent desperate to prove himself.

Discussing the role with TheWrap in October 2026, Cooke described the ease of rediscovering her bantering partnership with Jack Lowden. That rapport matters because their scenes carry competing demands. The characters need to exchange information, argue and respond to danger, while still sounding like people with a shared history. The jokes are part of the relationship rather than a separate comic performance placed over the thriller.

Sid in the books and on screen

Begin with Slow Horses, the novel adapted for television Series 1. Sid's connection to River belongs to the original story, alongside the wider question of why the Service has put these particular people together. Reading her early scenes after seeing the programme changes the emphasis: the novel supplies its own pacing and perspective, while Cooke's performance makes much of the character's appeal immediate. Neither experience requires treating River's first impressions as reliable.

Reveal later book and adaptation spoilers

Sid resurfaces in Slough House, the seventh numbered novel. Television Series 6 combines that book with Joe Country, bringing her return forward within the show's usual progression through the numbered books. The change places her renewed partnership with River inside a pursuit already under way. Her reappearance is therefore both a personal reckoning and an immediate practical complication; there is little time to absorb the revelation before they need to act together.

Key relationships

River Cartwright is Sid's principal counterpart. Their exchanges work because neither is content to let the other control the conversation. Jackson Lamb supplies the office's hostile working atmosphere, against which Sid's relative ease becomes especially noticeable. The contrast is useful: Lamb intimidates through insults, while Sid's teasing can create a connection even when it irritates River.

Reveal Sid's relationship with the Park

Diana Taverner sent Sid to Slough House to watch River. That assignment complicates an apparently straightforward friendship without making every friendly exchange meaningless. The difficult question is where professional observation ends and personal attachment begins. Roddy Ho later helps expose the uncertainty surrounding the official account of her disappearance.

Sid's arc by series

Series 1 spoilers

Sid and River investigate Robert Hobden, and she is shot in the head during the confrontation at his home in episode 2. Her removal from the story changes River's experience of the case: his impatience now sits beside fear and guilt. The final episode leaves an unresolved trail when Roddy cannot find the expected records. The uncertainty belongs to a Service able to control information about its own employees as readily as information about an operation.

Series 6 spoilers through episode 4

Sid appears at David Cartwright's house at the end of episode 2. Episode 3 gives her and River the conversation their separation has postponed, while assassins force them to keep moving. She explains that MI5 concealed her survival and relocated her. By episode 4, the danger surrounding her identity has made protection by the Park an urgent question rather than a reassuring assumption. Her return restores the old verbal sparring while exposing how much the institution has withheld.

Why Sid matters to the ensemble

Sid gives the office an important alternative to its usual ways of coping. Where some colleagues retreat into cynicism or private fantasy, she engages with the person beside her. Her exchanges with River can be competitive without becoming as corrosive as the wider workplace. That distinction makes their partnership worth following independently of the case. It also strengthens the series' concern with trust: an organisation can place people in the same room for purposes they do not understand, but it cannot entirely determine what those people come to mean to each other.

Episodes to revisit

S1E1 introduces the partnership; S1E2 contains the Hobden investigation and shooting. S6E2 ends with the reunion, and S6E3 gives Sid sustained focus.
