Bad Tradecraft changes the question from how MI5 will stop the kidnapping to how far MI5 has already shaped it. Lamb is drawn into a bargain with Taverner, while River is dealing with Sid’s injury and Min and Louisa encounter a threat inside their own workplace. The resulting crisis finally gives Slough House a common task, although agreement with Regent’s Park offers little comfort.

Detailed plot
Reveal episode spoilers
Min and Louisa spend time together at the pub as news of Hassan’s captivity continues. Their return to Slough House places them in the path of a masked intruder. What begins as a private evening becomes a struggle inside the office, and the intruder dies. The place in which they have been wasting working days has suddenly become a crime scene. The dead man’s identity makes the intrusion stranger still: he is their colleague Jed Moody.
River, meanwhile, is at the hospital after Sid’s shooting. He is worried about her and has attracted attention from MI5’s security officers. Lamb arrives and helps him get away, bringing him back towards Slough House and another emergency. The rescue shows a different side of a boss who has spent so much time belittling River. He can still operate effectively when the situation calls for it, and his involvement offers practical protection rather than reassuring words.
At the office, Lamb examines Moody’s body and finds two phones. One provides a direct connection to Diana Taverner, making it clear that Moody’s activities cannot be dismissed as a disconnected break-in. Lamb arranges a meeting beside the canal. Away from their respective offices, the two officers trade information and pressure. Their conversation reveals that Hassan’s kidnapping is entangled with an operation directed from Regent’s Park.
Taverner has placed an undercover officer among the kidnappers. Her plan depends on controlling the outcome, exposing the extremists and bringing Hassan out alive. Hobden’s knowledge threatens that control. Lamb recognises the danger of the scheme and the predicament into which his own staff have been pulled. He agrees to help bring the operation to an end, securing protection for the people under his command. His bargain does not make the plan safe; it gives him a reason to intervene.
Hobden seeks help elsewhere, going to Peter Judd’s house and warning the politician about the consequences if Hassan is killed. Judd is irritated by his visitor, but Hobden’s suggestion of MI5 involvement is harder to ignore. At the kidnappers’ house, Hassan attempts to escape. He nearly gets away before being caught again, leaving him back in the hands of men whose disagreements provide no dependable protection.
Lamb takes River, Min and Louisa to the hideout to carry out the agreed intervention. Before they can deliver a controlled resolution, Curly turns violently against Moe. When the officers arrive, the door is open and the house contains a horrifying scene: Moe has been beheaded, while Hassan and the surviving kidnappers have gone. The supposedly managed operation has collapsed. Lamb’s team have reached the address, but the hostage has disappeared and the danger has become harder to contain.
Turning points
Reveal turning points
The phones turn Moody’s death from an isolated workplace disaster into evidence of a hidden relationship with the Park. Lamb moves from defending the office against an immediate threat to negotiating with someone who can threaten its future. His competence is shown through what he notices and the questions he asks, rather than a triumphant explanation to his colleagues.
The canal meeting gives both sides a reason to speak while keeping their interests separate. Taverner needs a problem contained; Lamb needs his staff protected. Their agreement is therefore a transaction under pressure, and the kidnapped man has to survive a plan designed by people who are also defending their positions.
The discovery at the hideout breaks that transaction’s central assumption. An embedded officer cannot guarantee control over the people around him. By arriving after the killing, Slough House becomes associated with an outcome it did not cause, placing the team in precisely the sort of institutional danger Lamb has been trying to avoid.
Book vs show
Reveal book and television spoilers
1. The missing colleague
Herron’s Slough House ensemble includes Kay White, whose office is part of the group brought into the kidnapping crisis. Television removes Kay from the department, concentrating its workplace scenes on a smaller set of colleagues.
2. The fourth extremist
The book’s captive is held by three men, so Moe’s death leaves Curly and Larry. With Zeppo added to the television group, the murder leaves three captors capable of arguing over Hassan’s fate.
3. Time remaining
The novel begins the hostage threat with a 48-hour limit and later announces 30 hours remaining. The television plot uses sunrise as the promised execution time, keeping Lamb’s bargain and intervention inside the overnight crisis.
Mick Herron, Slow Horses (2010).
Characters and actors
Lamb and Taverner’s meeting dominates the episode’s political manoeuvring; River, Min and Louisa supply its immediate consequences. Steven Waddington plays Jed Moody, whose death connects the office to the wider operation. Samuel West’s Peter Judd is drawn into Hobden’s warnings. Hassan and his captors remain essential participants, with Moe’s position among them becoming the focus of the final reversal.
Linked locations
The Slough House office becomes a dangerous place to return to, while the hospital keeps Sid’s injury present in the story. Lamb and Taverner meet beside the Regent’s Canal in Camden. The exposed waterside setting gives their private bargain a different atmosphere from the protected offices where they normally exercise authority.
Trivia
Contemporary reviews identified the canal conversation as the episode’s central set piece. It relies on Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas exchanging pressure and information in one location, rather than an elaborate action sequence. The later arrival at the hideout turns a negotiated arrangement into a visual shock.
