The Slough House Files spy duckTHE SLOUGH HOUSE FILES

Slow Horses · Series 2 · Episode 4

Cicada

“Cicada” answers the question of how Min died, then overturns River’s idea of who is dangerous in Upshott. Lamb follows the murder into an international operation, Louisa gets close enough to Pashkin to put herself at risk, and Catherine tries persuasion instead of force. The episode brings the separate investigations together by showing that the people who appeared to be offering information were helping to control it.

Detailed plot

Reveal episode spoilers

Rebecca tells Lamb what happened to Min. He was already drunk and barely able to stand when the Russians attacked him. The car was used to stage an accident, but Min survived the impact, and Chernitsky finished him off. A fourth man watched. Rebecca was paid to supply a false account, and her description of where she collected the money leads Lamb back towards Katinsky’s language school. The truth gives Lamb identifiable suspects while making the concealment of the murder look deliberate at every stage.

When Lamb goes to the school, Katinsky has anticipated the visit and calls the office from elsewhere. He admits that keeping Lamb occupied was part of an arrangement. Lamb returns to Slough House and uses Min’s watch data to follow the stops made during the bicycle pursuit. At the import-export business he asks about the parcel collected by the Russians. The records do not tell him what was inside, but the delivery connects their movements to something more substantial than an ordinary security detail.

Lamb and Shirley watch Nevsky’s heavily guarded home and notice that nobody reacts to their presence. An open door gives them access to a scene that explains the silence. The guards are dead, and Nevsky has been subjected to radioactive poisoning. A radiation detector and the state of his body make staying there dangerous. His missing thumb supplies a further ugly detail whose purpose is not yet clear. They leave knowing that Webb’s promised access to a living Russian dissident has been built around a man who is already dead.

Catherine visits the broker Victor Krymov to pursue the arrangements behind the meeting. She gets herself into the conversation through paperwork and tries to exchange personal information for something useful. His interest in her past does not make him generous with his own knowledge. Louisa takes a more confrontational route, meeting Pashkin at his hotel and preparing to force answers from him about Min. Marcus intervenes before she carries out her plan. Lamb tells her about Nevsky and orders her to continue with the scheduled meeting rather than destroy the chance to uncover the wider operation.

In Upshott, River maintains his journalist’s cover through dinner with Chernitsky and the Tropper family. He plants his service phone on the visitor and follows its signal after the meal. The trail returns to the flying club, where Chernitsky is working with Katinsky. River confronts them with a gun and assumes that Duncan is the family’s sleeper agent. Alex approaches as though she is an innocent bystander, gets close enough to use a taser and brings him down. His strongest deduction about the household was wrong, and the operation can proceed with him restrained.

Turning points

Reveal turning points

The discovery at Nevsky’s house removes the premise on which Webb thinks he is working. Pashkin’s claim to represent the oligarch cannot be taken at face value once the supposed principal is dead. Min’s death stops being a separate tragedy on the edge of the assignment and becomes evidence of what the security men are capable of concealing.

Catherine and Louisa offer two responses to withheld information. Catherine risks telling something personal to obtain an answer; Louisa prepares to use pain. Marcus prevents the latter from ending the investigation prematurely. River’s final mistake has a different source: he has fitted the family into a theory too early. Alex defeats him because he treats her as someone to protect rather than someone to watch, even while standing among people he knows are dangerous.

This is also the point where the operation’s scale becomes physically visible. A phone trace can be doubted, a story can be rehearsed and a file can conceal a lie. The bodies at Nevsky’s house make those abstractions impossible to maintain. Lamb and Shirley do not arrive with an elegant explanation; they find consequences before they know the plan. Their retreat preserves that distinction, leaving the audience with evidence of lethal power rather than a completed account of who intends to use it next.

Book vs show

Reveal book and television spoilers

River’s novel route to danger involves a military training area. Television brings him to the flying club, concentrating the confrontation in the aviation setting.

Louisa carries pepper spray and plastic handcuffs for her novel interrogation plan. The episode gives her a utility knife, sharpening the visible threat of injury.

Tommy Moult attacks River in Dead Lions. Television gives Alex the task of incapacitating him, turning the apparently hospitable mother into his immediate captor.

The novel’s skyscraper is the Needle; television names it the Glasshouse. Both concentrate the London assignment in a tall building with offices and a hotel.

Characters and actors

Linked locations

Upshott’s village setting continues to contrast with the danger River has found around the flying club. Slough House links the rural operation to Min’s London movements through the recovered watch data. Nevsky’s home and Pashkin’s hotel serve as separate story locations: the first exposes a completed murder, while the second becomes the setting for Louisa’s abandoned attempt to obtain answers.

Trivia

Catherine McCormack plays Alex Tropper, while Adrian Rawlins plays Duncan and Tamsin Topolski plays Kelly. The reveal relies on Alex having been introduced as part of a hospitable family rather than as an obvious counterpart to the threatening Chernitsky.

Questions and answers

Who is the sleeper agent in Kelly’s family?

Alex Tropper. River suspects Duncan, but Alex uses that assumption to get close enough to incapacitate him with a taser.

Is Min’s death an accident?

No. Rebecca describes a coordinated killing followed by an attempt to make it look like a collision involving a drunken cyclist. Chernitsky and Pashkin’s security men were involved.

Why does Marcus stop Louisa at the hotel?

She is preparing to force answers from Pashkin herself. Marcus intervenes on Lamb’s instructions, and Lamb orders her to preserve the planned meeting so they can learn what the Russians are doing.
