Last Stop

A retired intelligence officer spots a familiar face and follows him into a journey he will not survive. “Last Stop” reopens the Cold War through an apparently ordinary death, while River searches for a way out of Slough House and Min and Louisa accept work from Spider Webb. The three ambitions pull in different directions: finding a murderer, recovering a career and proving that Lamb’s cast-offs can still do something useful.

Detailed plot

Reveal episode spoilers

Dickie Bow interrupts his working day when he recognises a man passing outside. Recognition comes with memories of captivity, and he sets off after him rather than letting the encounter disappear. The pursuit takes him through London and onto public transport. At first the elderly follower appears to be keeping up with his quarry. By the final bus journey, however, he is struggling to stay conscious. He types a last message into his mobile and pushes the phone between the seats before collapsing. What looks like a natural death has left a concealed witness.

Jackson Lamb visits the bus under cover of being Dickie’s bereaved brother. He softens his manner for the driver, turning apparent confusion and grief into permission to look around. Once left alone, he searches the seats and recovers the phone. The unfinished warning consists of one word: “Cicada”. Lamb’s reaction makes clear that this belongs to the intelligence world he would rather have left behind. The man he is mourning was not an admired colleague, but his death still demands attention.

Back in London, Catherine finds several desks empty for less sinister reasons. River is interviewing for private intelligence work, hoping his experience will outweigh the damage of his current posting. His interviewers are more interested in Jackson Lamb than in him. Min and Louisa have meanwhile met Webb, who wants background security for a meeting with Arkady Pashkin, representative of the wealthy Russian dissident Ilya Nevsky. The prospect of operational work tempts them despite the certainty that Lamb will resent being bypassed.

Lamb assembles the office around Roddy’s computer to reconstruct Dickie’s movements. The footage shows a pursuit, but the missing train recordings prevent them seeing exactly what happened between follower and target. Shirley is sent to retrieve the physical data. She steals an access card and depends on Roddy cutting the electricity at the right moment to get into the storage facility. Their cooperation is hardly smooth, yet she escapes with the drive the investigation needs.

River visits his grandfather and raises Dickie’s death. David explains the old story of Soviet sleeper agents called cicadas and their supposed controller, Alexander Popov. The Service had dismissed the operation as a fiction and Dickie’s account of abduction as an excuse for drunkenness. River is less ready to accept the verdict. When the recovered recordings reveal close contact between Dickie and the man he followed, River concludes that the apparent heart attack was murder. Lamb now has a lead towards the Cotswolds and an eager officer to send after it.

Turning points

Reveal turning points

The hidden phone transforms a routine death into an intelligence problem. Dickie cannot explain what he has recognised, but his final word gives Lamb a question that the original medical explanation cannot answer. Lamb’s trick with the bus driver also establishes the difference between his office manner and his ability to work a situation: the same man who humiliates his staff can appear entirely harmless when it serves him.

River’s failed interview matters because the new investigation offers the opportunity the private sector refused him. He has fresh evidence to bring Lamb instead of another complaint about his posting. Shirley’s break-in provides that evidence, giving the newcomer a practical success before the series has spent much time explaining her history. The office’s petty rivalries continue, but they no longer prevent its members producing something useful together.

The two job offers reveal different ideas of escape. River tries to persuade strangers that he is worth employing; Min and Louisa are offered a chance by someone whose motives they distrust. Neither option depends on what they achieved in the previous season. The office can solve a crisis without changing the terms on which the wider profession sees it. That makes the new murder investigation more than a return to action: it is another test of whether practical ability has any connection to professional reward.

Book vs show

Reveal book and television spoilers

Dickie’s route changes from the novel’s Paddington, disrupted Worcester train and Reading sequence to television’s pursuit beginning at his workplace and continuing towards Oxford Parkway.

The book reintroduces Slough House through a wandering cat; the episode uses Catherine’s arrival and her search for colleagues missing from their desks.

Shirley and Marcus share an office in Dead Lions. Television places Shirley with Roddy, making his habits part of her first experience of the posting.

Novel Pashkin presents himself as the billionaire being courted. Television makes him Nevsky’s representative, adding an absent principal behind the people arranging the meeting.

Linked locations

Slough House provides the base for reconstructing Dickie’s final movements. Public transport carries the opening pursuit and Lamb’s search for the concealed phone. Min and Louisa also examine the Glasshouse from another building as they prepare Webb’s security assignment. The tower is introduced as a future meeting place before the season’s eventual confrontation turns it into the centre of the action.

Trivia

Shirley Dander and Marcus Longridge join the television team in Series 2, played by Aimee-Ffion Edwards and Kadiff Kirwan. Their first substantial work here is deliberately uneven: Shirley gets the physical assignment, while Marcus has to endure Lamb refusing to treat a newcomer’s name as important.

Questions and answers

Why does Lamb investigate a man he disliked?

Dickie was an intelligence officer. Lamb treats the suspicious death of a former colleague as a responsibility even though he makes no effort to pretend that they were friends.

What does cicada mean in this episode?

It refers to the alleged Soviet sleeper network discussed by David Cartwright. Dickie’s last message brings a story the Service had dismissed back into the present investigation.

Does River leave MI5 for the private sector?

No. His interview fails, and he returns to Lamb with evidence about Dickie’s death. By the end, the investigation has offered him a new route into fieldwork.
