Who is Spider Webb?

James “Spider” Webb is an MI5 officer whose professional confidence far exceeds his generosity towards colleagues. He belongs to the smart offices of the Park rather than the shabby rooms of Slough House. His relationship with River Cartwright introduces one of the programme’s central questions: does the Service reward the best officer, or the person best equipped to impress the people making appointments?

Spider’s nickname invites a joke, but his importance goes beyond being an irritating rival. He understands hierarchy, presentation and the usefulness of another person’s embarrassment. River tends to charge towards an objective; Webb spends more energy establishing who will receive the credit. That difference makes their confrontations funny before it makes them dangerous.

Freddie Fox’s performance

Freddie Fox (cast profile) plays Webb with an eagerness to dominate every exchange. The formal clothes and self-satisfaction make him instantly recognisable as a creature of the Park. Fox told TheWrap that insecurity fuels the rivalry: River represents the capable agent Webb would like to be. The contempt is consequently personal, even when Spider presents it as professional judgement.

That performance works because the arrogance has limits. Webb can sound authoritative in a controlled setting, yet becomes much less impressive when somebody else controls the room. His manner offers an entertaining contrast with Jackson Lamb, whose disreputable appearance conceals competence rather than advertising it.

In the books and on screen

Begin with Slow Horses and Dead Lions for the foundations of the character and River’s resentment. The adaptation gives their rivalry a continuing visual identity. A smirk, a pause or an ostentatious accessory can carry the kind of judgement Herron supplies through narrative voice.

Series 3 is a substantial departure for Webb. Fox confirmed in his TheWrap interview that Spider does not appear in Real Tigers. Keeping him on screen lets the programme connect its new security-company story to a familiar face, turning an established office grievance into part of the operation.

Key relationships

River is the emotional centre of Webb’s rivalry. Diana Taverner represents the authority he wants to remain close to, while the Slough House team represents people he can patronise. These relationships make him an effective guide to the organisation’s class system: access and appearance can count for more than the work itself.

Arc by series

Series 1 spoilers

Webb’s role in River’s disastrous training exercise establishes their antagonism. River’s reassignment gives Spider a position from which to enjoy somebody else’s humiliation.

Series 2 spoilers

His security assignment brings Louisa and Min into a dangerous Russian operation. His confidence survives longer than his control of events.

Series 3 spoilers

Now working in private security, Spider stages a test that uses Standish’s kidnapping to manipulate River. Sean Donovan takes the operation beyond its agreed limits and kills Webb. The adaptation adds this death to a novel in which Webb is absent.

Episodes to revisit

Revisit Hard Lessons and Negotiating With Tigers for the rivalry’s most elaborate reversal.
