“Grave Danger” removes the distance between the buried operation and the people trying to investigate it. Harkness gets inside the Service’s information systems, Lamb forces David to confront a family bargain, and Flyte has to decide what to do with River’s account. At Slough House, the others begin joining the practical clues together. Almost every useful step creates an additional exposure: an address, a photograph or an old memory can lead towards the truth and also tell an assassin where to go.

Detailed plot
Reveal episode spoilers
Molly Doran arrives home and finds Frank Harkness waiting. He has previously used the name Mitch Philpott to obtain information about former officers, exploiting her recognition of a supposed colleague. Now he demands access to the Park’s systems. Molly tries to resist, but the threat of physical harm leaves her facing a visitor who already understands the organisation well enough to use her knowledge against it. The quiet authority she exercises in the archive offers little protection when he brings the threat into her own home.
Flyte has River in custody after finding him at David’s house. He asks her to circulate the photograph recovered at Les Arbres, arguing that it connects the men in France to the bombing. She sends it to Giti rather than leaving the evidence confined to their conversation. River also wants a short opportunity to speak to his grandfather. Those requests put Flyte between the person she is transporting and the senior officers expecting her to deliver him. Taking his evidence seriously does not mean she has accepted his right to run the investigation alone.
At headquarters, Whelan’s enthusiasm for transparency has collapsed as the implications of the cold-body identities become clearer. He and Taverner now share an interest in containing the scandal. His attempt to explain the situation through a presentation is interrupted by the information Giti has been asked to assemble. The photograph points towards a connected group rather than an isolated bomber. Meanwhile, Harkness’s access gives him a way to follow River’s movements. The officers debating what to conceal are themselves being watched through the systems they control.
Lamb and Catherine take David to his wife’s grave. Lamb uses the old man’s fear that he killed River to push him towards an explanation of the French exchange. David admits that the woman Chapman retrieved was his daughter. He supplied Harkness with what he wanted so that she could be brought home, despite knowing the kind of operation Harkness was building. The deal links a family rescue to resources that supported later violence. David’s desire to protect his own child has become part of the danger now surrounding his grandson.
The team at Slough House follows the attacker’s movements, using records and camera footage to find what happened after Lamb hit him with the taxi. Moira’s administrative contacts help move the search forward, while Coe punctures some of the assumptions sustaining his colleagues. Harkness leaves Molly alive with messages intended for senior people and sends Patrice back into action. Flyte’s convoy becomes the next target. A dustbin lorry crashes into a car and Patrice attacks the Dogs. He knocks Flyte unconscious and frees River from his restraint only to force him into another car’s boot. River’s transfer to official custody has ended in a new abduction.
Turning points
Reveal turning points
Molly’s predicament shows the cost of a recognition shortcut. The visitor who used a familiar professional identity has obtained real information about people who expected the Service to protect it. Once he is in her home, Harkness does not need to persuade her that they share interests. The bluff has already done its work, and violence can extract the remaining access. Institutional knowledge becomes a resource for the person least entitled to hold it.
David’s confession does not simplify him into either an innocent victim or an entirely calculating villain. A father trying to retrieve his daughter made a bargain whose consequences reached people he did not know. Lamb’s method is cruel, but the information explains why the present attack is entangled with the family’s private history. The graveside setting keeps that motive in view while denying it the power to excuse what the exchange enabled.
Flyte’s decision to circulate the photograph opens a useful route around the managers controlling the investigation. The convoy attack then demonstrates that doing something sensible inside an unsafe system is not enough. She has taken evidence seriously, but Harkness can still exploit official movements. The finale is set up by a disturbing reversal: River was harder to reach while acting outside instructions than he becomes after the Dogs take charge of him.

Characters and actors
Catherine moderates a conversation Lamb is prepared to make deeply unpleasant, while David has to supply the family history River cannot yet ask him for. Louisa treats the scattered clues as work that can be divided and completed instead of waiting for one brilliant intervention. Coe remains separate from the office’s usual rhythm, but his comments reveal that he has been listening. Flyte’s scepticism towards River now has to coexist with evidence supporting his concerns.
Linked locations
Confirmed: Gresham Street in the City supplied the convoy ambush, with some impact shots filmed at Bovingdon Airfield. Composite: the Slough House offices hold the parallel investigation. Molly’s home and the graveside confrontation put private spaces at the centre of a case the Park is trying to control.
Trivia
The Gresham Street ambush was filmed over several weekends, allowing the production to assemble the crash and gunfire across separate shooting periods, Ian Pollington told Time Out.
Questions and answers
Who was the woman Chapman brought home?
David confirms that she was his daughter. Retrieving her was the reason he arranged the exchange with Harkness.
Why does Harkness visit Molly?
He wants access to information and systems that help him locate his targets. His earlier impersonation of a colleague has already enabled him to obtain private details.
Who abducts River from the convoy?
Patrice attacks the Dogs, knocks Flyte unconscious and takes River away. The episode ends before River can establish where he is being brought.
