Sophie Okonedo in Slow Horses

Sophie Okonedo plays Ingrid Tearney, MI5’s First Desk in Series 1 and 3. Her initial presence is brief, but the third series gives the role much greater weight. Tearney’s office sits at the top of an organisation accustomed to controlling other people’s information. Okonedo makes that seniority visible through restraint: she seldom needs to raise her voice to establish who expects obedience.

Her scenes with Kristin Scott Thomas are a particular attraction. Diana Taverner’s confidence meets somebody who can refuse to be impressed by it. Rather than treating their exchanges as an obvious confrontation from the outset, Okonedo lets the tension develop inside the forms of official conversation. Courtesy is still present, even when neither woman has any reason to trust the other.

What she said about joining the series

Okonedo told the Guardian she accepted her brief Series 1 appearance because a larger role was planned.

That progression rewards a return to her early scene after watching the third series. The actor does not have to announce all of Tearney’s capabilities in a first encounter. Her later work can expand the audience’s understanding of a person who initially seems to belong chiefly to the institutional background.

Series 3 standout scenes: spoilers

The struggle over the Istanbul evidence makes Series 3, episode 5 an important example of Okonedo’s control. Tearney attempts to keep a damaging operation contained while Diana manoeuvres against her. In the finale, the escaped evidence changes what Tearney can command. The distinction between the office’s continuing authority and its holder’s dwindling protection is central to the performance. Her collapse in power does not require the audience to forget the composure that made her formidable.

Career highlights and awards

Okonedo played Tatiana Rusesabagina in Hotel Rwanda (2004). The Academy’s record for the 2005 ceremony confirms her nomination for Actress in a Supporting Role. The film offers a very different use of her screen presence from Tearney: the character’s circumstances demand emotional immediacy within a story of catastrophic danger.

She won a Tony Award in 2014 for A Raisin in the Sun, in the category Actress in a Featured Role in a Play. The official Tony record distinguishes that win from the Oscar nomination. Both deserve accurate wording; a nomination is not a win, and an award for a Broadway performance is not a television prize.

At the National Theatre, she played Cleopatra opposite Ralph Fiennes’s Antony in Simon Godwin’s 2018 production of Antony and Cleopatra. Its filmed version provides an opportunity to see her work across a much larger dramatic canvas than Tearney’s office scenes. Politics, intimacy and public power repeatedly collide in Shakespeare’s tragedy.

Where to watch next

Begin with Hotel Rwanda (2004) for the Oscar-nominated film performance. The filmed Antony and Cleopatra (2018) offers her Cleopatra and the full interplay with Fiennes. Dirty Pretty Things (2002), in which she plays Juliette, is another film credit recorded in Apple’s biography and a return to a contemporary London setting. These choices move between cinema and a captured stage production without assuming that a past live performance is currently running.
